JC Fellow Isaac Filat at Public Counsel files amicus in defense of immigrants’ data protection against ICE surveillance

JC Fellow Isaac Filat at Public Counsel, in partnership with the National Consumer Law Center, drafted and filed an amicus in the Northern District of California in support of Plaintiffs in Sequeira v. DHS

This brief supports a lawsuit by Just Futures Law and Edelson PC filed on behalf of immigrant consumers targeting money transfer businesses, including Western Union, that are actively sharing consumer information with dozens of government authorities such as Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

The brief focuses in on the importance of remittances for immigrant communities as the court weighs a novel legal question: whether money transfer businesses are ‘consumer finance institutions’ under the RFPA, 12 U.S.C. § 3401” – JC Fellow Isaac Filat
